Job description:
Software Development Manager (Primarily Windows based Applications - SQL and C++ experience desirable) - Gloucestershire

Technology Sector

Location : Tewkesbury : Gloucestershire - UK

Circa £50,000 base, 60,000 package including pension and benefits.

Relocation assistance is available.

This is a permanent position but other forms of engagement will be considered such as fixed term contract.

Our client is the Technology arm of a FTSE 100 business which has grown organically and by acquisition. The Technology division has a turnover of some £200M and produces electronic security products and systems including Intruder Detection, CCTV, Access Control, Electronic Monitoring, Cashless Vending, ATM security, Identity Management systems etc which can be integrated into networked security solutions installed into buildings. The business is now one of the foremost innovators and suppliers within the security industry.

Products are supplied to customers in over 100 countries which sell, install, service and maintain end user systems. These systems are often large, integrated and complex. Increasingly systems are IP based, networked to PCs and interfaced with other third party equipment, buildings management systems, communications and secure monitoring systems, often working from one platform across multiple locations.

The manufacturing and production parts of the Technology business consist of some 200 people reporting to the Technical Director in Development, Manufacturing, Quality, Business Planning and Technical Support functions.

Technological advancement in the industry is occurring at a very rapid pace and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Product development is driven by the needs of installing businesses and end-users. These changes present an opportunity for our client and in response the number of new products and services being developed is markedly increasing.

The R&D team reports to the Development General Manager and the members of the team focus on different product lines. Our client is now strengthening its R&D function with the appointment of a Software Team Leader for the Intruder Detection Product Line. Although the Development Team as a whole is well established, the technological platform for the Intruder product line is an acquired business which was based abroad. Its transfer to the UK has severed links with the past. Its team of three development engineers based in Tewkesbury is relatively new.

The company is now recruiting a Leader to provide proactive leadership for this development function and bring improved consistent momentum and direction ensuring a more robust delivery schedule in a number of key areas. This will involve new product development to best service the market trends outlined above and attention to legacy issues mainly relating to coding and architecture necessary to improve functionality at the user interface. This will involve revisiting and strengthening the core product and using the resulting understanding to benefit the Intruder product journey to the next generation which the new manager will help define.

Security experience is not a pre-requisite in candidates for this position. Of course, we require technical depth in the software skill sets particularly related to PC related Windows applications (exposure to SQL and C++ is essential and UML would be helpful) which may have been developed in other environments, possibly automotive, defence, automation, instrumentation, transport and buildings systems sectors. The position will appeal to people whose experience is with products designed for mass production rather than single, large engineered solutions.

We are keen to speak to people possessing genuine enthusiasm and commitment, interested in working as part of a team, keen to build cross-functional working relationships and demanding of themselves in terms of their own skills and personal development. Candidates will still be hands-on in -coder completer- mode but also broadly experienced with management exposure and able to see the big picture.

The individual in the role will have the full support of senior management but must take ownership of its development and contribution to the business in a well supported but autonomous role. This is an opportunity for an experienced -self-starting- manager to make a real individualised contribution to a business at an important stage of its growth. The role will require high levels of credibility, maturity and experience.
